At least one high profile war critic sounds alarmed by a recent revelation that Mr. Bush signed a “secret finding” against “the Iranian regime” six weeks ago. I’m frankly less than agog about it.
In a May 2 CounterPunch article, Andrew Cockburn wrote that Bush has launched a “covert offensive” on Iran that is "unprecedented in its scope." The “directive covers actions across a huge geographic area – from Lebanon to Afghanistan.” The directive, according to Cockburn, also permits an expanded range of actions, “up to and including the assassination of targeted officials.”
Wow, I thought as I read it. That’s some scary sounding stuff. Then, out of habit, I rescanned the piece to note who Cockburn’s sources on the secret finding were, and here’s what I found: “those familiar with its contents.”
Great. Caesar’s. Ghost. Credibility wise, that kind of thing puts Cockburn and CounterPunch on an even footing with Michael R. Gordon and the New York Times.
Just when I'm becoming so tired of this endless campaign.
Just when I start to worry that maybe Obama blew it a little bit.
Just when I start to forget why he's gotten this far, and wonder how effectively he can respond to what could easily be a terrible "gaffe".
I see this video from Halperin's The Page under the headline COUNTERPUNCH:
update: Now with embedded YouTube video!
How brilliant is that? I mean, this guy is good. I would have loved to have been in the crowd for this one, as he was on top of his game as I haven't seen him be in a while. Fresh, vibrant, visceral, effective. I wish I knew what that person in the crowd said toward the end of the video. He asks, hears the answer, chuckles, but doesn't repeat it and moves on.
Jeffrey St. Clair is calling HRC 2008 a "beserker" campaign. Basically is she acting to destroy this election so she can come back in 2012?
Though they will move this story once new ones appear, you can find it now at Counterpunch's front page.
Any other candidate would have been shamed into dropping out long ago. But these are the Clintons and they have no shame.
So why does Hillary persist? Because she hasn't abandoned her aspiration for the White House. Not in 2008, but for 2012. Here's the perverse logic at work.
Florida Progressive Radio is proud to announce that our special 9 p.m. show tonight, Thursday December 20, 2007, will feature Congressman Robert Wexler, who will be on the show to talk about his new push to hold impeachment hearings for criminal Vice President Dick Cheney. Also appearing on the show will be several other Cheney impeachment supporters: Bob Fertik (Democrats.com), Dave Lindorff (Case for Impeachment, Counterpunch Magazine) and David Swanson (AfterDowningStreet).
There has been a lot of talk lately about youth voters in Iowa. Will they turn out to the caucuses? Will out of state college students even be around on January 3rd? Is Obama as strong among this demographic as he appears to be? What’s with Dodd and Clinton’s comments about out of state college students?
Yesterday I was consumed with the crazy thought that my son who is an EOD(explosive ordinance Disposal) Team Leader just got home from Afghanistan now wants to volunteer for Iraq. I am very concerned as you are with what Iraq is going to look like in a year, how long we will be there, and how many Americans will lose their lives in Bush's lost cause. with 114 americans killed so far in May I see this getting a lot worse and lasting a lot longer than any of us want.
This morning I was listening again to the number of Americans killed in past wars including the civil war where some 562 thousand lost their lives as you know, fighting amongst ourselves. At first I was focused on the wasted lives in Iraq and was wondering how many there would be when all is said and done as well as feeling there is no foresable end. then I went to this list and I wanted to compare how many lives were lost in wars in contrast to how many we lost fighting amongst ourselves.
I've had my issues with Counterpunch.org's allegedly progressive pundit Alexander Cockburn over the years, but I think he's finally completely jumped the shark. Talk about strange bedfellows, he's flung himself wholeheartedly into the arms of the global warming deniers.
Follow below the fold for the gory details and some responses:
Both Democratic and Republican politicians are becoming uncomfortably aware that they may have seriously miscalculated just how unpopular the war in Iraq is with a very large number of American voters. And the implosion of the Republican Party--battered by one tempest after another--is getting to be bad as it was in 1932 or 1964. Of course the political system will adapt. Already the National Review's Bruce Bartlett is writing that the party's candidate for the presidency is doomed in 2008 and prudent Republicans should rally behind Hillary Clinton.
It's no secret we Democrats have our enemies on the Right and it's fitting we spend the bulk of our time and treasure combatting them. However, this diary is to to raise the issue of the fringe Left's relationship with the Democratic Party. They seem to have a love/hate relationship with our party. Some belong to fringe parties like the RCP or the Greens or the good' ol CPUSA. Others are freelancers who claim to be Democrats but spend most of their time attacking us.
The other day I posted this diary entry regarding some language from a January 2006 counterpunch article that supports my contention that the NAACP is co-opted, bought and sold.
I received an interesting response from someone who coined the term "CounterFeit."
I would love to read your opinions and any actual links you may have to substantiate them.
As I approach my final criminal pretrial tomorrow I have distilled 550 blawg entries into one 15 paragraph indictment with hypertext links to demonstrate precisely why the Nashua NAACP is a sellout enterprise. (more on A2).
On March 7, 2006, David Lindorff wrote this in an article at Counterpunch. He was totally wrong on this, and Howard Dean emailed him to please correct it. A snip from Dean's email below. Lindorff implies it makes him get noticed as a journalist.
