Blogging Watson's Genome
Thu May 31, 2007 at 02:44:05 PM PDT
We all should know who Dr. James Watson is. Along with Dr. Francis Crick and the less acknowledged Dr. Maurice Wilkins, they shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material."
In other words they discovered the structure of DNA.
Fired U.S. attorneys ranked above peers in prosecutions

I couldn't find any other diaries on this story, if there is I'll delete.
The title says it all really. It's the title of the article as well so I get zero points for creativity.
How about reading some more...
The Sims: Postwar Iraq
Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 02:57:05 AM PDT
I suppose one could make such an expansion pack to the
famous computer game but I'm afraid that the Bush administration already has the copyrights on it.
This is one of the most extraordinary pieces I've read about our little adventure in Iraq.
It will be no shock to those who frequent this site or have been a functioning member of the reality-based community the past few years that our entrusted leaders of government paid little attention to the pre-war planning that predicted most of the problems that country faced, such as looting, and is still facing, such as high unemployment and shortages in every-day necessities.
The body that was to oversee our new colony's reconstruction was the Coalition Provisional Authority under viceroy Paul Bremer. Ostensibly,
...the CPA was the U.S. government's first and best hope to resuscitate Iraq -- to establish order, promote rebuilding and assemble a viable government...
But...wait for it,
Zeta Strengthens
Tue Jan 03, 2006 at 01:20:52 AM PDT
As discussed last week
here, and
here there is another tropical storm - Zeta, and
it's getting stronger.
Though it's nowhere near land and no projection I've seen suggests this will be a hurricane its existence sure gives me, at least, an uneasy feeling about the future.
An Omen of the Iran to Come?
Mon Dec 19, 2005 at 08:17:12 PM PDT
Back in the mid 90's I remember hearing about this ruling party in Afghanistan, called the Tailban. The story was about them banning music, all of it. And I thought "what horrible people to do such a thing". I knew that it would get worse. Then came the stories about destroying the ancient Buddha statues. Then another, then another, then...Al Qaeda, hosted in Afghanistan in large part by the Taliban. And we all know what happened with al Qaeda.
Tonight I learn that Iran is now banning "Western Music"
And, as the story says, it's an eerie reminder of the Iranian (Islamic) Revolution of the late 70's where "popular" music was one of the first victims.

Deciphering the Plame investigation: An Old Hound's New Hunt
Sat Nov 19, 2005 at 05:42:59 PM PDT
There is lots of nice stuff to read in
this piece from Greg Sargent at the America Prospect (via the analysis of one astute Gerald Lechliter). But, aside from the obvious meat of the article, it goes to show that some quality investigating isn't being done by "real" journalists.
In the home stretch of the 2004 presidential campaign, Lechliter, a retired army colonel from Delaware with a bit of spare time on his hands, wrote a 32-page analysis of George W. Bush's military records that showed that Bush had shirked his duty. Lechliter sent it to The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof, who wrote a column, "Missing in Action," that called Lechliter's missive "the most meticulous examination I've seen of Mr. Bush's records." Lechliter helped revive the story, and his analysis was subsequently cited in publications all over the country.
We all remember that. Of course we remember the MSM going ape shit over the Dan Rather reporting on the forged document (with factual content).
Kudos to the intrepid "little guy". He's on another story - Plamegate.

A Foreshadowed Death
Tue Oct 25, 2005 at 04:35:05 PM PDT
Mr. James O. Kinlow, 35, of Holt St. died -------- in Iraq.
This is what this 18 year Guard member wrote in his journal. James Kinlow of Thomson, Georgia died on July 24th, 2005 months after writing it in his journal. A precient thought. And one of a particulary horrific and sickening variety. He knew Iraq was a deathtrap yet he still joined the Guard knowing that it was a real possibility he could be send to you know where.
This is a gut punching story. One that will only make you fume more at this disgrace to humanity - George W. Bush.
Kinlow's final entry, July 23, ends on a happier note -- "Got my leave." He could look forward to two weeks at home in mid-August.
That never happened. Cruel twist of fate? Bigger plan from God? Or simmply one of now 2000+ victims of a madman from Texas. Highly educated but hardly intelligent. Avowed compassionate but barely humane.
If Bush doesn't make you question the existence of God he definitely makes you certain of the existence of the Devil.
A New Vice President?
Tue Oct 18, 2005 at 09:46:35 AM PDT
I started writing this last month but never posted it because I got too busy to finish it. Nothing profound probably, but anyway.
Most of us at this point are probably just grateful for the 22nd Amendment (while still cursing it because we would be in the 4th Clinton term if it wasn't there).
We've heard many times VP Cheney saying he has no intention on running for President:
I've got my plans laid out," he said. "I'm going to serve this president for the next four years, and then I'm out of here. . . . In 2009, I'll be 68 years old. And I've still got a lot of rivers I'd like to fish and time I'd like to spend with my grandkids, and so this is my last tour. I don't plan to run for anything.

Harriet Miers is Not Just a Stealth Candidate, She's a Trojan Horse
Thu Oct 06, 2005 at 10:42:40 PM PDT
That's my take as of now.
Here's my reasoning.
Bush said she is a pitbull in size six shoes. But pitbulls are notorious for biting the hands that feed it. That isn't going to happen here. She's more lapdog in size six shoes. After all, according to former Bush speechwriter and biographer David Frum Miers said Bush was the "most brilliant man she had ever met." (More on this in the Update [2005-10-7 12:2:54 by agentcooper]: below)
We all know that Miers has been Bush's personal and professional lawyer since the earl 90's. Yet Bush said that he doesn't recall ever asking her stand on abortion.
I don't buy that for a second. I know almost all my friends' position on abortion. In fact I know many of my coworkers' position on abortion. I find it very unlikely that Bush, one of the most political and conniving politicians of our time, doesn't know her position on abortion and most other hot button issue for that matter. I submit that he knows her exact position and that is why he nominated her. She'll be Bush's pocket justice.

Priorities - a Comparison of Two Cities
Sat Sep 03, 2005 at 05:05:03 PM PDT
[Update #1] I changed the title to better reflect the content.
Refugees are being
forced from Tallahassee hotels for Monday's college football game between FSU and Miami.
While here in Houston, which is the same distance form NO as it is from Tallahassee, Mayor White and other officials are postponing football games and other events at Reliant Park, said White:
"We're going to kick people out who were planning to do things. This is an emergency," he said. "If it entails somebody suing us, then OK."
and
Six Flags Astroworld, across the South Loop from Reliant Park, announced it will be closed today, Sunday and Monday to ensure traffic does not interfere with relief efforts.
Right on Mayor!
GOTV!
Sun Oct 17, 2004 at 11:49:41 PM PDT
I know we are all going to do the right thing and vote for Kerry but how many of us are going to help get out the vote? And I mean: canvass, phone bank to remind Dems to vote, drive people to the polls, etc. And please reply if you will be going out of state (to a battleground state) to GOTV.
I'm personally going to Wisconsin. I currently live in Texas.
