Blogs are Impotent:: Watershed Moment
Thu Jun 15, 2006 at 10:07:16 PM PDT
Peter Daou
nails this straight on:
Anybody who watched Ann Coulter's June 14th appearance on the Tonight Show had to realize that it was a watershed moment in the war between the establishment media and the progressive netroots, a community fresh off the successful YearlyKos convention. It was also a signal to Democrats that liberal ideology can be denigrated with impunity. Had the words "Jew" or "Christian" or "Conservative" been substituted for "Liberal" we'd be waking up to a national scandal.
Coulter has labeled an enormous segment of the American citzenry "sub-human, as creatures deserving of public scorn and worse."

New Depleted Uranium Study: Big Implications
Thu Jun 01, 2006 at 08:00:51 AM PDT
New research being conducted by a team at Northern Arizona University, indicates that depleted uranium (DU) is much more harmful that currently acknowledged. The continued use of depleted uranium in Iraq and Afghanistan continues to alarm
veterans' groups and other activists.
As reported, this study places DU squarely in the category of lead, arsenic (well-known to be harmful) and therefore highly toxic independent of its radioactivity.

Richard Clarke Speaks in Phoenix Today
Sat Nov 05, 2005 at 05:32:28 PM PDT
Through dumb luck, I walked into Border Books at the Desert Ridge Mall in North Phoenix this afternoon and stumbled upon Richard A. Clarke, giving a lecture and book signing for his latest release,
The Scorpian's Gate, an as-yet fictitious thriller about the fall of the House of Saud. For those of you unfamiliar with Mr. Clarke, he is a former U.S. counterintelligence chief, an expert who served under four separate Administrations (Reagon, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II). He is famous for having provided
scathing testimony (subscription required) against the Bush administration at the 9/11 Commission hearings and writing the book,
Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror. Mr. Clarke has been castigated repeatedly by the White House and news media and proclaimed a liar. Nearly everything Richard Clarke has written or spoken about has since proven to be true.

FactCheck.Org vs. MoveOn.Org -- Somebody Lied
Mon Sep 26, 2005 at 11:27:19 PM PDT
FactCheck.Org's post today, incorrectly suggests that an anti-war coalition, including MoveOn.Org, is way off base in claiming that this Administration has lied its way into war with Iraq. Oh please ... But even with the complete quotes by Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al., these are STILL LIES and an affront to our intelligence. Who are they trying to fool at this late date with the argument that our "dear leader" was a victim of "then-current" intelligence. Poor schlep, he didn't know! Never mind that it's obvious he ignored any intelligence that disproved his "theories" of weapons of mass destruction.

HR235 -- Your Church CAN Tell You How to Vote
Wed Jun 15, 2005 at 10:33:42 PM PDT
Sneaker bill in U.S. Congress will allow all churches (synagogues and mosques, too -- if that's reassuring) the right to endorse political candidates without fear of losing tax exempt status. What??? Scared yet? Read
this:
H.R. 235 would permit religious congregations to support or oppose candidates for public office and conduct partisan campaign activities without losing their tax-exempt status, as long as the activity takes place in the context of a religious meeting. It would apply to elections at the local, state or federal level. A congregation could use funds raised through tax-deductible contributions to fund these activities. Religious organizations could re-distribute and publicize endorsement-sermons and other election-related presentations made during their services or gatherings, through television, radio, and other media.

Social Security: Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them
Wed Mar 02, 2005 at 10:08:01 PM PDT
Well let's
reinvent history, or at least the recent past, when things aren't going our way:
Republicans have returned from a weeklong recess telling stories of meetings on the issue with voters who ranged from suspicious to downright hostile. At a town-hall gathering at the Madison #1 Middle School in Phoenix, Ariz., G.O.P. lawmaker John Shadegg faced a crowd of 280 people, 30% of whom by his estimate were there to voice angry opposition to tinkering with Social Security.
[Emphasis added.]
Funny -- It sounded like a 100 % opposition to me. But what do I know, having merely attended in person, up close and personal. A shameless lie.

Social Security's 'Moynihan Personal Accounts' -- ?
Thu Feb 24, 2005 at 08:59:28 PM PDT
WTF??? At least that was my reaction when I first heard the phrase during tonight's "town hall" meeting hosted by Congressman John Shadegg. The event was held this evening in an elementary school auditorium in central Phoenix. I was attending thanks to some last minute e-mails circulated from a local progressive group. This get-together was not widely advertised, but obviously significant, and apparently part of broader initiative for Congressmen to float the Administration's proposal during the current recess. Well, if Representative Shadegg hoped to find out which way the wind blows; he got more than he bargained for.
